7-Day Multi-Island Azores Itinerary: São Miguel + Pico + Faial

A 7 day Azores itinerary covering São Miguel, Pico and Faial by a local — flight logistics, ferry connections, and what to prioritise on each Atlantic island.

Traditional windmills on Pico Island — one of the islands you'll see on a multi-island Azores trip

A 7 day Azores itinerary across multiple islands sounds ambitious but is actually the sweet spot. The Azores has nine islands. Most first-time visitors see one — São Miguel. That’s the right call for a short trip. But if you have a full week and want to experience the contrast between the islands, the São Miguel + Pico + Faial triangle is the classic multi-island itinerary — and the one that delivers the most variety per day.

Three islands, three completely different landscapes, one week. Here’s exactly how to do it.

Why this 7 day Azores itinerary works

IslandWhat it addsTime needed
São MiguelVolcanic calderas (Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo), hot springs (Furnas), whale watching, best food scene4 days
PicoPortugal’s highest mountain (2,351m), UNESCO vineyard landscape, volcanic moonscape, whale watching heritage2 days
FaialCapelinhos volcano (erupted 1957), Horta marina, caldeira hike, the famous Peter Café Sport1 day (day trip from Pico)

The Pico-Faial pair works because a 30-minute ferry connects them multiple times daily. You stay on Pico and day-trip to Faial — no hotel change, no flight, just a boat across the channel with Pico Mountain rising behind you.

The logistics (read this first)

Flights

  • International → São Miguel (PDL): direct flights from Lisbon, London, Frankfurt, Boston, Toronto, and others
  • São Miguel → Pico (PIX): SATA Air Açores, ~45 minutes, 1-2 flights daily. Book 2-3 weeks ahead. ~€60-€90 one way.
  • Pico → São Miguel (or home): same SATA flights back. Or fly out of Faial (HOR) if your international connection allows.

Rental cars

  • São Miguel: rent at PDL airport on arrival, return before your Pico flight. €70-€80/day.
  • Pico: rent at PIX airport. €75-€85/day. Smaller fleet than São Miguel — book ahead.
  • Faial: not needed for a day trip. Taxi or half-day rental in Horta.

Ferry

  • Madalena (Pico) → Horta (Faial): Atlanticoline ferry, ~30 minutes, multiple daily departures. €10-€15 per person round trip. Buy tickets at the port or online.

Where to stay

  • São Miguel: Ponta Delgada, 4 nights
  • Pico: Madalena or São Roque do Pico, 2 nights

View from Miradouro da Vista do Rei over Sete Cidades — the São Miguel anchor of any multi-island trip, Azores

Day 1 — Arrive São Miguel, Ponta Delgada

Same as the 5-day itinerary Day 1. Arrive, pick up the car, settle into Ponta Delgada. Walk the old town — Portas da Cidade, the marina, Igreja de São Sebastião. Dinner at A Tasca or Tukà.

Before bed: check tomorrow’s weather and call a Furnas restaurant to reserve cozido for Day 3.

Day 2 — Sete Cidades + west coast

The full Sete Cidades day, compressed:

08:00 — Leave Ponta Delgada 08:30 — Boca do Inferno viewpoint (best photo on the island) 09:30 — Vista do Rei + the abandoned Monte Palace hotel 10:30 — Drive into the village, lake shore walk 12:00 — Lunch in the village 13:30 — Drive to Mosteiros — sea pools, black sand beach 15:00 — Ponta da Ferraria thermal ocean pool (check tide chart — low tide only) Sunset — from Mosteiros or Ferraria Evening — back to Ponta Delgada for dinner

Day 3 — Furnas (full day)

The full Furnas experience:

09:00 — Drive to Furnas (45 min) 10:00 — Miradouro do Pico do Ferro, then Lagoa das Furnas cozido cooking holes 12:30Cozido lunch (your reservation) 14:00 — Caldeiras das Furnas village walk 15:00 — Terra Nostra Garden Park (gardens + thermal pool, 2-3 hours) Evening — Back to Ponta Delgada, OR Poça da Dona Beija evening soak

Day 4 — Lagoa do Fogo + Caldeira Velha

The interior day:

08:30 — Drive to Lagoa do Fogo viewpoint 09:00 — If clear: hike the Praia trail to the lake shore (2.5 hours total) 12:00 — Caldeira Velha thermal forest spring (20 min from Lagoa do Fogo, €8) 13:30 — Lunch in Ribeira Grande or drive to Vila Franca do Campo Afternoon — Vila Franca: Ilhéu natural pool (summer only) or pineapple plantation visit Evening — Last dinner in Ponta Delgada. Pack for tomorrow’s flight.

Return the rental car tonight or early tomorrow morning at the airport.

Day 5 — Fly to Pico, vineyard landscape, coastal walk

The island switch. The flight is short but the contrast is dramatic.

Morning — SATA flight Ponta Delgada → Pico (~45 min). Pick up rental car at PIX airport. Late morning — Drive to your hotel in Madalena (the main town, west coast). Check in.

Afternoon: Criação Velha vineyards

13:00 — Drive south from Madalena to the Criação Velha vineyard landscape. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site — vines planted in tiny walled enclosures (currais) made of black volcanic stone, protecting them from Atlantic wind and salt. Walk the interpretation paths through the vineyards. Unlike anything you’ve seen on São Miguel. 15:00 — Continue south along the coast to Cachorro — a dramatic section of volcanic coastline with lava arches, blowholes, and natural swimming pools. 16:30 — Drive east to Lajes do Pico — the old whaling capital of the Azores. Visit the Whaling Museum (Museu dos Baleeiros) housed in former whaling boathouses. Even if you’re not a museum person, the scrimshaw collection and the scale of the old whaling boats are worth 45 minutes.

Dinner

In Madalena. Simpler restaurant scene than Ponta Delgada — good, honest fish and meat.

Before bed: if you’re hiking Pico Mountain tomorrow, prep your bag tonight. You need: boots, warm layers, rain jacket, 2L water, headlamp (for the pre-dawn start), snacks, sunscreen. Check the weather forecast and confirm your guide booking (guided ascents are strongly recommended and sometimes required).

Day 6 — Pico Mountain (or whale watching + Faial)

This day has two options depending on your hiking ambition and the weather.

Option A: Pico Mountain summit hike

Portugal’s highest peak (2,351m). A serious full-day hike — not technical, but physically demanding with 1,200m of elevation gain.

05:00 — Leave hotel (pre-dawn). Drive to the Casa da Montanha trailhead (~20 min from Madalena). 05:30 — Start the ascent with your guide. Headlamp on. 08:00 — Sunrise above the clouds. On clear mornings, you can see Faial, São Jorge, Graciosa, and Terceira from the summit. 09:00 — Summit (Piquinho, the tiny secondary peak at the very top — scramble, optional). 09:30 — Begin descent. 12:30 — Back at the trailhead. Afternoon — Rest, lunch, recover. You’ve earned it. Evening — Dinner in Madalena. Early night.

Practical notes:

  • Guide: strongly recommended and sometimes required by park authorities. Book through Casa da Montanha or a local agency. ~€40-€60 per person for a group ascent.
  • Fitness: you need to be comfortable hiking 7+ hours on steep terrain. Not a beginner hike.
  • Weather: summit attempts are cancelled in bad conditions. Have Option B ready as a backup.

Option B: Whale watching + Faial

If you don’t want to hike Pico Mountain, or the weather cancels it:

09:00Whale watching from Lajes do Pico (3-hour boat trip). Pico has the Azores’ deepest whale watching tradition — sperm whales are resident year-round, and the vigias (old whaling lookout towers) are still used by tour operators to spot them. ~€60-€70 per person. 13:00 — Drive to Madalena, catch the ferry to Horta, Faial (30 min). 14:00 — Explore Horta: the famous Peter Café Sport (a sailor’s bar since 1918, walls covered in yacht club pennants from around the world), the marina (tradition says you must paint a mural on the harbor wall for good luck), the Capelinhos volcano on the western tip (erupted in 1957-58 and added new land to the island — the interpretation center built into the ash is world-class). 18:00 — Ferry back to Pico. Evening — Dinner in Madalena.

Day 7 — Morning on Pico, fly home

Morning — If you did Pico Mountain on Day 6 and skipped Faial: take the morning ferry to Horta for a quick 3-hour visit (Peter Café Sport, Capelinhos, marina walk), ferry back by lunch. If you’ve seen Faial already: relax in Madalena, swim at one of the coastal natural pools, browse the local shops. Afternoon — Return rental car, fly from Pico back to São Miguel (or directly to Lisbon if available).

What to pack for a 7 day Azores itinerary

Multi-island packing is different from single-island. You move twice in seven days and check bags onto inter-island flights with strict 23kg limits. Here’s the local cheat sheet:

  • Soft duffel or backpack, not hard suitcase. Pico’s tiny airport handles bags by hand and the small rental cars on Pico don’t fit large rolling suitcases comfortably.
  • A real waterproof shell. Both islands have rapid weather changes. Pico’s summit attempt absolutely requires a proper shell — non-negotiable.
  • Layers for elevation. Sea level on Pico is 18°C in June, the summit is 5°C. The same hour, the same day. Plan accordingly.
  • An older bathing suit. The thermal pools at Furnas stain fabric permanently — and you’ll do them on Day 3.
  • Hiking shoes with grip. Volcanic terrain everywhere. Sneakers slip on lava rock.
  • A small cash reserve. €50–€100 in cash. Some smaller spots on Pico don’t reliably take cards, especially the stalls along the vineyard walking routes.

Common mistakes on a 7 day Azores itinerary

After watching dozens of friends do versions of this trip, the patterns repeat:

Booking the inter-island flight too late. SATA’s Ponta Delgada–Pico route runs only 1–2 flights per day in shoulder season and they sell out three weeks ahead in summer. Book before everything else. The single biggest scheduling mistake is treating this flight like a domestic short hop — it’s a constrained inventory.

Underestimating the ferry weather days. The Madalena–Horta ferry usually runs reliably, but two or three times a winter the channel gets cancelled. Have a Plan B for Day 6 and Day 7 — most often that means doing Faial earlier or accepting a “Pico-only” option for the back half of your trip.

Trying to add a fourth island. Terceira and São Jorge tempt people. Don’t. The flight schedules don’t align cleanly and the seventh day becomes an airport day. Stick to the triangle, get to know each island properly, and save the others for a future trip. The Azores rewards depth over breadth, and three islands is already pushing the upper limit of what fits in a week without the trip becoming exhausting.

Skipping the ferry timing check. The Madalena–Horta ferry runs about every two hours in summer and roughly four times a day in winter. Build in a buffer either side of your planned crossing — at least 90 minutes between the ferry arriving and any onward booking. Locals consistently check the ferry schedule the night before, not the morning of.

Should you do this or just stay on São Miguel?

Honest answer: both are excellent trips. If you want depth, relaxation, and zero logistics headaches, 7 days on São Miguel alone gives you a thorough, unhurried experience with weather buffer days and time for hidden gems.

The multi-island version is for travelers who want contrast — São Miguel’s green calderas versus Pico’s black volcanic moonscape, thermal pools versus mountain summits, subtropical forest versus UNESCO vineyard stone. You trade depth for breadth, and the inter-island logistics are real (flights, two rental cars, packing/unpacking).

My recommendation: if this is your first Azores trip, lean toward São Miguel only. If you’ve been before, or if variety is more important to you than pace, the three-island itinerary is one of the best week-long trips in Europe. For the trail side of a multi-island trip, the Azores hiking guide covers the standout routes on each island.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit multiple Azores islands in 7 days? +

Yes, but limit it to 2-3 islands. This itinerary covers São Miguel (4 days), Pico (2 days), and a day trip to Faial from Pico. Adding a fourth island in 7 days means losing too many hours to airports and logistics. The São Miguel + Pico + Faial triangle gives you the most variety: volcanic calderas and hot springs (São Miguel), mountain and wine landscape (Pico), and volcanic coastline (Faial).

How do you get between Azores islands? +

Inter-island flights (SATA Air Açores) connect São Miguel to the central group islands in 30-50 minutes. Flights between Ponta Delgada and Pico/Faial run daily but schedules are limited (1-2 flights per day). Between Pico and Faial, a 30-minute ferry runs multiple times daily from Madalena to Horta. Book flights at least 2-3 weeks ahead — they sell out in summer.

Should I rent a car on each island? +

Yes, on São Miguel and Pico. Book separate rentals — you can't take a mainland rental car between islands. On Faial for a day trip from Pico, you can either rent a car in Horta or take a taxi/tour (the island is small enough). Return each car before your inter-island flight.

What's the best order to visit the islands? +

Start with São Miguel (4 days), then fly to Pico (2 days), day-trip to Faial by ferry, and fly home from Pico or back to São Miguel for your international flight. Starting on São Miguel makes sense because it has the most to see, the best restaurant scene for your first nights, and the main international airport.

Is a 7-day multi-island trip worth it or should I just stay on São Miguel? +

If this is your first Azores trip and you have exactly 7 days, a strong case exists for spending all 7 on São Miguel at a relaxed pace. You'd see more of the island, have weather buffer days, and avoid inter-island logistics. The multi-island version is better for travelers who want variety and don't mind a packed schedule. See our guide on how many days you need for the full breakdown.

How much does a 7-day multi-island trip cost? +

Rough budget for two people: inter-island flights €100-€180 per person, two rental cars (4 days São Miguel + 2 days Pico) €430-€500 total, Pico-Faial ferry €10-€15 per person round trip, hotels €60-€120/night, meals €50-€80/day for two. Total: roughly €1,700-€2,700 for two people excluding international flights. Summer is 20-30% more expensive than shoulder season.
